The days seem longer and the years shorter plays true after having kids. I enjoy every moment knowing how fast the past three years have flown by. But some days boredom sets in and you just run out of ammunition to play another car game, set up train tracks or pitch (and fetch) a baseball. Don't get me wrong, I love these little moments of our playtime together. But it is relaxing and joyful to sit and watch your child play on their own and experience new things.
Today we experienced learning texture and color blending. We pulled out the shaving cream and my son became a man. Not really a man, but in the end of this activity he did have shaving cream all over his face and on his ENTIRE body.
So I warn you, the clean-up is messy if your child will not jump directly into the bath.
What you need:
- Shaving Cream (I got the one we used at the Dollar Store along with the food coloring, making this super inexpensive!)
- Food Coloring
- Baking Sheet
- Q-Tips
Spray your pan with shaving cream. The pan is great because it keeps it all in one place. Add drops of each color dye in a row such as red followed by a row of blue, green and yellow. This way you can blend the red and blue and see purple appear. Or swirl green and yellow together and watch blue appear. Hand your toddler the Q-Tip and let them mix and play!
Soon enough their hands will get in the mess and they may even make a full body outfit out of it. Trust me, whatever happens, shaving cream play is so much fun!

I remember doing this as a kid! Whenever I was a nanny, I used to let the kids paint each other with pudding. After they were done, I would just hose them off in the yard. Such simple summer fun!
