What is a green tea shot?
A classic green tea shot (or "Jameson Green Tea") is a whiskey based cocktail made of five simple ingredients. It is similar to a White Tea Shot, except the main ingredient is whiskey instead of Vodka.
Jameson whiskey company is the leader in the Irish whiskey market and the spirits continue to dominate the markets due to quality, triple distilled, great-tasting, and crafted with a smooth taste that is made to be share with friends.
Mixologists might laugh at the simple combination of Irish Whiskey Peach Schnapps and Sour Mix spirits that created the name for this green alcoholic drink.
Afterall, what makes this drink get its name if there is no actual tea in it? The name comes from the light greenish yellow color - not to be confused with a shot of matcha green tea or white tea drink!
This Jameson green tea shot recipe is a tasty little drink! It tastes like a summer cocktail you will want to sip and enjoy on a hot summer day with a sour taste and fruity flavor. These party shots are perfect for a green themed party, the holidays, or St. Patrick's Day Irish celebration with some Irish soda bread and matcha protein balls to snack on!
What is in a green tea shot?
- Jameson Irish Whiskey
- Sour mix
- Peach Schnapps
- Lemon-Lime Soda, Sprite, or Lemonade
- Ice cubes
Key Ingredients
- ½ ounce Jameson Irish Whiskey - Although some people like to also make a Vodka version similar to a kamikaze. (And if you would rather stick to American Whiskey you can always go with good ole' Jack Daniels!)
- ½ ounce Sour mix - This gives the green tea drink a sweet and sour flavor and greenish color! It can also be found as Whiskey Sour Mix or Sweet and Sour Mix.
- ½ ounce Peach Schnapps - A whiskey peach schnapps combination adds just the right punch to make your mouth pucker with peachy flavor.
- a splash of Sprite, Lemon Lime Soda, or Lemonade - Soda adds a hint of bubbly and sweetness yet tones down the drink slightly.
- ice cubes
See recipe card below for full instructions and quantities.
Do I need green tea to make these shots?
Sorry to disappoint you but you will not get an antioxidant and health boost here, just a sip of happy! These popular shots do not have actual green tea in it so you do not need green tea to make a Jameson tea shot. It is purely alcohol and splash of bubbly soda. If you are looking for a non-alcoholic recipe, try this version.
Tools for a whiskey-based shot
Here's what you need for making this recipe. I highly recommend using a jigger for measuring cocktails and alcohol shots. If you don't have one just measure out 1 tablespoon (which equals ½ ounce). You can also use a mason jar with a lid to shake the ingredients with ice - in place of a cocktail shaker.
How to make a Jameson green tea shot
Add ice cubes to a cocktail shaker or a glass. You will use ½ ounce or 1 tablespoon (see how many tablespoons in a ounce chart) each of Jameson Irish Whiskey, Peach Schnapps (peach liqueur), and Sour Mix.
Then pour each of the ingredients into the glass or cocktail shaker and then stir it or cover and shake vigorously to chill. Pour the sweet-sour whiskey drink over a shot glass and top with a splash of sprite, lemon lime soda, or lemonade.
Turning shots into full green tea cocktails to drink
Rather not take a quick cocktail shooter? Me either - I like to sip my drinks and enjoy them slowly. You can still sip this beverage in a shot glass or enjoy it as a full tea cocktail in a highball glass. The drink has a toned down and lighter flavor this way.
Here's how to turn this shot into a cocktail: In a larger glass or whiskey glass, add ice and pour the shots over ice. Add extra lemon-lime soda or sprite to fill the glass to the top or make it into a spritzer and add sparkling water and fresh lime juice or other fresh citrus juices. You can also multiply the recipe mixture and make it in a pitcher.
Shot glasses
I just love a fun shot glass, and the square effect of these makes it perfect for sipping slowly or slurping down in one gulp. These shot glasses hold about 2 ounces, just enough for a Jameson shot, and comes in a 6-pack. You can order them through Amazon here (affiliate link) - enough to share with friends! Or to double-up, try these glass liqueur shot glasses.
Line the shot glasses in a row, fill them up, and enjoy!
Garnish ideas
Garnishes add a pretty delivery to cocktails and shots. Try any number of these before serving:
- lime wedge
- tangerine wedge
- lemon or lime zest
- fresh mint stalk with leaves
- fresh cucumber slice
Tips for simple syrup
In this green tea shot recipe, I use sour mix, but you can also make a homemade simple syrup which is much better for you. Here is a quick recipe:
- 1 cup water
- ½ cup sugar – or use monk fruit for less sugar
- ¼ cup fresh lime juice
- ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
STEP: On a stove heat the water and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the stove and let it cool completely. Once cooled, add the lime and lemon juice and mix it together. Store in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
If using simple syrup in place of sour mix, just add the same amount.
Rum, Tequila, Gin
This classic green tea shot recipe has a full five star rating! It is always made with whiskey. If you prefer another alcohol such as vodka, rum, tequila, or gin then try our white tea shot recipe.
Recipe FAQs
Green tea shots price at a bar is about $10 each. It is much cheaper to make this drink at home and enjoy with friends! In fact all these liquor ingredients cost around $50 - and you get far more than 5 shots! So if you want to save a some money-honey (and make these often)- make them at home.
Jameson green tea shots get the name not because there is green tea in it, but because of its light greenish yellow hue.
One green tea shooter has 1 ounce of alcohol. It is a small amount that will likely just give you a buzz but not really get you drunk, unless you have a few.
Yes! This drink is delicious! Each serving has about one ounce of alcohol, but the sour mix and sweetness of peach schnapps masks that taste makes them sweet and tasty little shooters!
Really there is not much difference between white tea and green tea shots. The only difference is the hard alcohol. White tea shots use vodka, making the color white. Green tea shots use whiskey, which makes the color greenish-yellow when mixed with sour mix.
